Jernej Jakše
Prof. Dr. Jernej Jakše is a full professor of genetics at the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Agronomy Department. His work spans both basic and applied research in genetics and biotechnology, where he employs cutting-edge research methodologies and using state-of-the-art research equipment. A key aspect of his work is translating scientific discoveries into practical applications, particularly in plant genomics. His research group has made significant advancements in developing molecular marker systems, leading to results in the study of hops and other crops, as well as their associated pathogens. These insights have also been instrumental in assisting plant breeders through genetic variability studies and genetic mapping analyses. Prof. Jakše is committed to advancing modern technologies, particularly in applying next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques to address critical biological questions. His expertise lies in genomics and transcriptomics, with a focus on diagnostic applications for identifying crop pathogens, such as fungi, viroids, and viruses. Following the discovery of Citrus bark cracking viroid (CBCVd) in Slovenian hop fields in 2017, Prof. Jakše has dedicated a significant portion of his research to studying viroid biology. His goal is to unravel the mechanisms by which viroids cause plant diseases, ultimately contributing to better crop protection strategies.
